Re: Lucas head lamp shell Help id please

Forums

Hi,

attachment shows what I think is a shell from an early Dominator. Help identifying would be much appreciated. Thanks Paul.

It looks very similar to the one on a 1957 Dominator, with the cutouts for speedometer, ammeter, switch and logo

Thank you both,

it makes sense as there was a wideline frame 1957 with it. The owner of the lamp and a pair of mudguards wanted more for them than I was happy paying so I just bought the frame. He left the lamp and guards with me for now to ask around/show to my Norton owning pals but they're all skint as well!! Paul.

That one looks like it came from a coil ignition bike with the PSR8 switch. Did coil ignition exist on the Dommy in 1957?. Just got my spare 1960 coil ign shell and its identical .Did the earlier Mag/dyno wideline use the same one or was the switch hole different?.

Hi Robert,

I think like you coil ignition was a 60s innovation. I've tried adding pics of the mudguards but they are too big for the site. In fairness to the seller he never dated them just said they were genuine and hard to come by. It's beyond my knowledge hence posting the question. Thanks Paul.

1959 & 1960 ES2's (wideline) were coil ignition, the shell looks correct for one of those.

Hi Paul,

What sort of money was too expensive? any chance of trying some more photos in lower resolution

On the open market could go to £100 but to a fellow Noccer I would ask for £50. But then I am a bit soft in the head.

Paul,

The Lucas MCH58 headlight unit was only fitted to 1956/57 Nortons and Panthers and is rather unusual as the instrument panel in the headlight was detachable, and was affectionately known as the gas mask headlight. The attached photo shows this type of headlight. In 1957 they changed the design so that there was no separate instrument panel, which I think is what you show in your photo.

My headlight is for sale and includes the chrome rim, headlight reflector, switch, ammeter and a Lucas badge to fill the little hole between them. In fact everything except the speedo. Looking for £200 as it is rather scarce to find these anywhere, Tel 01278 671626 between 7pm and 9pm please.

The one shown above by Dominic is identical to the one fitted on my 1957, Dominator 99, which is original.

If philip ham is correct with his information that the one he shows is fitted to a 1956/57 Norton, he is correct that it was changed in 1957.

As regards coil ignition I don't know when it was introduced exactly, but my own 1957 Dominator 99 does have coil ignition as original equipment.
