Plunger Inter Crankcase Breather

Forums

Putting the finishing touches to a 30's plunger Inter. I have a Crankcase Breather union on the L/H Crankcase half just aft of the Crank Shaft. I'm not too sure where it is supposed to go. I'm assuming it should have a pipe on it that is directed inside the chain case. Anyinfo on its routing or specific location would be helpful. Paul Gibbons (Surrey & Kent Branch)

I would have thought it would go to the rear drive sprocket, Paul? It certainly does on the other singles. George

Hi Paul,

If the engine is the original, the breather with the ball valve comes out about 10 degrees from vertical. The plated copper pipe that fits on this is curved back and directed towards the rear chain just in front of the gearbox sprocket so any oil spray lubricates the chain, this is the same as all the other single cylinder models.Try and get the pipe as close to the gearbox sprocket as possible when the gearbox is fully forward. On the earlier engines the breather comes out horizontally and points out sideways parallel with the crankshaft. Personally I would put a plain breather union on and direct it into the primary chain-case and oil the rear chain when necessary.

Regards, Richard.
