PL Garratt workshop manual

Forums

This workshop manual was written in the late 1950s or early '60s by PL Garratt, the Norton Service Department manager who succeeded EM Franks( the author of a well-known servicing book).  I have looked for a copy of Garratt for ages and not found one. Does anyone have a spare, or know where to find such a book?

Many years ago when I lived in New Zealand, I borrowed a copy of Garratt from the National Library on interloan, and made some photocopies (most given away to friends), but an original would be good to have.

That manual is a very detailed book for Norton owners. It does appear at auto-jumbles and i always buy them not matter what the cost. They are the only manual that i know of for the Nomad bikes.

Looking at this thread while sitting in th Whangarei Public Library, so could not help but ask a friendly passing librarian, and it is no longer listed on interloan, although may still exist , withdrawn due to age & frailty, posably in a main centre. -eg Wellington or Auckland.

Is the Garrett version much different from the F. Neill 'Norton service and overhaul manual'?

The first part of Neill covers '50, ES2, 88, 99, 650,  Sports Specials, 750 Atlas, 750 Scrambler', and the second part covers 'Jubilee, Navigator, Electra, 88, 99, 650 SS, 750 Atlas, 750 G15 CS'.

No publication date is given for either part.

5th edition (1962) covers Singles & Twins 1948-1960, plus Navigator 61-62 and 650 models. Most of the Singles are in there - 16H, 18, ES2, 19, Big 4, 30 & 40 International, 50, 500T. First edition was January 1949, but I don't have a contents list for that one.

F. NEILL's Service and Overhaul Manual isn't an original publication.  It's a compilation of several Norton factory manuals. Garrett's is significantly different as it's entirely original, aside from the illustrations.  My copy was well used in the 1960s, with many oily fingerprints and stains, but all still readabIe! I either couldn't afford Norton's Manuals, or they weren't available. Since those days I always buy any Norton handbook/manual and original Norton Spares books that I see at jumbles.

I also have two of W.C.Haycraft's "Book of the Norton Dominator Twins". One is the original publication, dated 1966 and the other is the reprinted version of 1971.  They too are originaIs.  I have a Franks manual somewhere, but can't find it!
