Petrol tank

Forums

The fuel tank to my ES2 is tatty, in need of a re-spray. There has beena tan coloured linerapplied, bits of which have broken off.The year of the bike is 1953 and I understand that it was not chromed due to the shortage of nickel caused by the Korean war.The tank does not leak but has been repaired.I would appreciate advice on the following options:-1. Get the tank re-painted - should I remove the lining and with what? I would use a professional to paint it. 2. get the tank chromed and painted. This is the most expensive option. alternatively 3. Replace the tank with a new one from India advertised on eBay- they appear to be chromed and sound.

I prefer the look of a chromed tank and accept that it may not be truly authentic. Thanks

The tan coloured coating is probably Petseal, if its breaking up it needs to come out. It may be removed with acetone, I did not need any chemicals as it all fell out using some nuts and bolts plus water. If your tank is not leaking then do not put a new liner in, derust with phosphoric acid and that will leave a rust resistant layer.

Hi Ian, these people come highly recommended. I am facing a similar decision but my tank is leaking in spite of its liner. They are able to remove a liner and prepare the tank for chroming. Something tells me it won't be cheap.

Hi Ian, There are lots of of posts, slagging off Indian tanks. However, I took a chance, and ordered a new tank for my ?54 Dominator from Royal Enfield King. The tank arrived this week, and, I am delighted with it. Chrome with the correct silver painted panels, with the Norton logo. Also complete with tank filler cap, and fuel tap. I emailed photos of the old tank, to show the correct position of the painted panels, and lining, and they have done an excellent job. The cost, including the custom painting, was 360 pounds, with free delivery. Far cheaper than getting the old tank refurbished.

John Hi,

That is very encouraging. Would you kindly share the contact details.

There are a number of companies advertising (some quite a bit cheaper)and I appreciate that "you get what you pay for".

Thanks,

Ian

I used CWC to modify a 69 Triumph TR6 tank to T120R pre 66 spec, it needed 4 threaded holes for the tank rack, 4 holes for older type tank badges and 4 holes for the side rubber holders added, 2 large dents removed and the filler hole soldered (common leak area on Triumphs) and then leak tested. I provided all the hole locations and the pieces to use for templates and the total cost was £110 plus postage both ways. Very pleased with the price and the end result, the T120R tanks 63 to 65 are very rare and even rarer in UK so it worked out way cheaper than finding the proper tank.

Hello again Ian, Just Google Royal Enfield King. The guy to contact is Arpit Gupta, he is very helpful, and will finish a tank to your specifications. I emailed photos of the original, and the new tank is an almost perfect match. The options range from bare metal to chromed, and painted, your choice. Regards, John.
