Original Lucas Medallion

Forums

Hi all

I have an original Lucas medallion but it needs some restoration. I think i can sort out the paint however it has a crack down the centre near the lions mane.

Wondering if anyone knew how it could be repaired. Thought maybe a windscreen repairer could inject it with clear resin but not sure.

I dont think the aftermarket medallions look right so want to try use the original if possible.

Thoughts and advice on its restoration most welcome

Thanks

Steve

Hi. Couldn’t you just apply a thin layer of Araldite right across the back of the whole medallion? That would hold it together and not let any moisture through the crack.

... superglue? It penetrates quite well.

Yeah could me worth a shot. Cheers

You could cast a new one in clear resin, making a mould from modelling clay that hardens in air

There is a superglue version that sets in ultraviolet light.  It allows you to adjust a break in clear materials in an inside room until you are perfectly satisfied, and then expose to bright sunlight when it sets instantly hard.

I suggest you clean it up with spirit first - meths is good - this should remove any of the loose silver paint.  Maybe strip that altogether, but as long as it's stable it will be OK to spray it with new silver paint.  You need a thin glue like Superglue for the crack, but I would use clear epoxy on the back (AFTER spraying silver) but not in the crack, similar to what Tony has said.  There's no need to open it up if you can get a close fit with the two pieces.  The epoxy will be a reinforcement on the back - which won't be seen Make sure it's acrylic-based, not cellulose (you'd be surprised how much is still out there!).

Yes -  I've done t his sort of thing before!

Thanks for the tips. At this stage im going to Keep the original one to the side and play with some repos.

A lot of the repos are almost identical matches but come pre painted. Lion and surrounds painted the same grey. Not very nice.

Using non acetone nail polish remover and cotton wool buds, i stripped the medallions to clear. I tried various silver paints in the lion but it just looked grey, the original seems to be metallic. I then got a chrome pen and used that on the lion. Unfortunately the chrome only shows on the side exposed to air and when you reverse to look at the medallion its grey. I then tried chrome spray paint and it was the same result.

My most recent attempt to get a similar finish was using a sponge and silver paint, dab at it to paint the medallion background. I then used a little clear silicone glue in the lion and pushed in some chrome foil. It seems to be my best shot to copy the look so far.
