oil pump, gasket or no?

Forums

When I removed the oil pump on a 1972 commando combat, I was surprised to find that no gasket was fitted between the pump body and the engine case. Even more surprising was that one was not included in the "complete" gasket and seal kit bought. What is the story? Does it need a gasket or is sealer enough?

Thanks,

Hugh

Have a look on Andover Norton site there diagram shows it as item 39 part number 06.2447 in stock

I believe it depends on the clearance between the timing cover faces when the crankshaft end feed oil seal is in place (check your manual). On my dominator, I run it without an oil pump gasket as when a gasket is fitted there is too much force needed to close the timing cover and it ruins the crankshaft oil seal. I don't use sealant between the faces on the oil pump, it's just a lapped fit.

Please see attachment which is from my dommie manual.

Thank you gentlemen. Like many things Norton it appears that the answer depends on year and measurement. My original parts list does not show a gasket and the workshop manual indicates that some late commandos did have them. In checking how much contact the pump output seal has with the timing cover, it seems one is not needed on this one.

Thanks to all and happy motoring,

Hugh

The paper oil pump gasket should always be fitted. The reason for the missing gasket on your engine may be the previous owner also used a pattern gasket set where this gasket was missing?

When fitting the gasket see it is the correct way round. I have seen engines where the oil pressure of the pump had punched its way through a wrongly-fitted gasket.....

Mine Joe did not have the hole of passage of oil corresponding to the hole of the crankcase, too small, the mechanic who went back up (awkwardly) my engine would have of to notice but that would be very however their manufacturing is adjusted. It made me, probably, a tightening of the engine and the fast wear of the camshaft for 8000 km. Regards
