Oil feed return

Forums

I am building a MkII Commando 850 engine into a wide line featherbed frame and have had a central oil tank made to hold the vital liquid. My question is this, do I need to create a restriction in the return side of the oil line to aid oil supply to the rockers or can I have a full flow return going into the oil tank.

Hi Barry.

You'd be best leaving the rocker supply as pressure fed from the timing cover as it should be on a MkII Commando. The return would then be full flow to the oil tank, hopefully via a cartridge oil filter.

Just a question, did you get the crank rebalanced for running in a featherbed frame?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your answer and it just confirms what I had thought, but its always wise to ask. I do have the rockers fed in the normal manner for commandos and yes the crank was rebalanced I think to a factor of 80%, I had it done by Basset Down engineering who I can't recommend highly enough, they were very helpful. With a bit of luck the vibes should be kept down enough so I can focus on the road ahead. Thanks again for your help.

Barrie.

As an aside, before you paint the frame you may wish to beef up the front engine mounting, similar to the slimline frame, as I understand that the additional stresses created by the larger and more powerful engine can cause the wideline front mount to crack.

Hi Ian,

Already there, when I started the build and looked at the lack of support on the front mount I created another lower down at the front by brazing another lug to the frame, hopefully all should hold together.

There's another attachment point that often gets forgotten about, even on standard machines but particularly on specials and that's the bolts securing the engine plates to the bottom main stand frame lugs. These help keep in check the twisting moment when heaving up and down on the kick start, and is probably more relevant when you have an 850 motor fitted.
