Oil consumption problem - repairs

As most will know Raphael will on principle no longer post on the forum. I have been in contact with him privately and the feedback from the repairs carried out on his (at his own expense) and other affected bikes is as follows:

Cylinders badly or wrongly honed

Absence of drainback holes in the pistons

Cylinder bores either bored or honed over size

Cheap and antiquated type piston rings fitted

As suspected a batchof (not all)engines would appear to have been produced using sub-standard parts giving rise to the unacceptable oil consumption. Poor quality control I think and not an "operator" error.

I find this hard to believe!! I would want to see this for myself before apportioning blame.

That is your right John. But I have my own experiences. My engine was even wors than Raphaels. After repair by F.W. Egli the engine DOES NOT suffer with oil consumption and it was me, who covered the expenses for repair.

If the oil consumption on these engines is/was as high as claimed, then who the hell , other than the manufacturer can be to blame? It helps nobody to allow 'brand loyality' to get in the way of rational judgement.

Well to my mind its not the case of a bad batch of anything but bad Honing or the wrong dementions put into the CNC mill , as they mill blanc pistons that where made for the Subaru Impresa. So it can be a case of only one or the other, and the demenition can Only come from the engineering design team at the top. and they know all about it there hoping it just run its course, with the test beds there now selling, Yours Anna J
