Norvil 'new' Commandos

I am told that the waiting list for a 'New' 750/850 Commando made to your spec is now 18 months to 2 years. To be honest i was for a while very keen in owning one although Champange desires and lemonade money i believe is the term. So i now have (the real thing) a 72 Commando that i love, but i am still intriged just where do these New Norvil bikes go as before buying my current steed i searched high and low for a used Norvil Commando. Mark.

I have just checked the prices, a basic 750 is £14700, the1000cc models are £18700, I quite agree, those Norvil Commandos are not cheap, doubtless they get bought by collectors and moulder away in air conditioned comfort next to the Ferrari.

Given a modicum of mechanical skills, you could do very much the same with your bike for quite a bit less money, just decide on a spec, farm out the bits you might find difficult to Your choice of Norton Specialist, get the paintwork done locally, put the big lumps together and you are away.

depending on engine and gearbox rebuild times from people like Mick Hemmings, you should be finished by March.

The prices are eywatering, £14700 for a basic 750 a 1000 is £18700 things like stainless steel fiittings are a further £600 and then 20% VAT on top. This makes a 961 look cheap and at least you will be getting a modernpiece of kit with proper tolerances etc etc. Given that you can buy a 750cc Nourish engine for around £6000, you could build a really nice specia for much less than Norvil charge. Have a look at this post in the forum.

PS the build time is now 3 years, even longer than a 961.

I bought a second hand Norvil three years ago at what seems a very reasonable price now when you look at "original" Commandos and new Norvils. It is a good bike and I think much less troublesome than an original. The purchase has not been without issues; keep your eyes peeled for a future edition of RH where I explain an unusual problem.

Surely build your own is a lot cheaper, and to a far superior spec using Mick Hemmings and Steve Maney racing etc.

For the sort of money being mentioned, there a some better buys. Despite liking my MKIII, the MV Agusta F4 Titanium would be where I would spend that sort of spare cash.

The timescale is also dubious, if they are that busy building them as new, they don't seem to be being registered here in the UK in large nimbers ie more than 2 or 3 a week, and if new, type approval in many other countires would mean most are either collection pieces or race bikes.
