Norton Paint Colours

Hello all, following-on from John Ward's forum thread regarding colours and paints for Norton machines, I am trying to update and recompile the colour chart/lists etc. for as many Norton machines as possible. The charts/lists we seem to have are rather out-of-date, listing 1980-90 Rover/BL/Vauxhaul/VW/Ford colours that are either no longer available or that have had their codes changed. Colours that are difficult to 'match' include the various silvers listed for the International, Mid-'50s Dommie petrol tanks and Commandos. Matches for 'Cream' is also a problem. What I'm after is not just a description of an equivalent but actual product codes for the paints. So, if you have recently painted parts of your machine(s) and were pleased with the match (to the factory original - not a shade of pink, just 'cos you like it!) can you let me know the details.

Thanks in advance ... .

Hi Mark,

I sprayed my 1963 Atlas last year using the Ford Silver Fox equivalent. I found a rattlecan version on ebay, a base coat and a 2k clear coat, made by Safonov Autolacke in Germany. I assume XSC352 or 352 is the code:

SprayMax 2K Set 800 ml Originallack FORD EUROPE XSC352 SILVER FOX MET. 1966-1971

Ford recently launched a new Silver Fox, which is a flat, non-metallic grey, code JQQLXWA, which is now stocked by many suppliers and can lead to confusion!

Hope this helps,

Holger

Hi Mark,

I have some experience of the RAL colour specifications and was very pleased with the RAL matches for Dove Grey and the blue on a Navigator.

In my professional life, specifying RAL colours allowed me to source pre-painted items from different suppliers home and abroad. Customers knew just what they were getting.

All these old fashioned 1970's car colour names are pretty useless to our international members.

As I'm approaching 71 in a few weeks time, I consider myself something of a silver fox anyway...

Had my 88 tank painted in this colour decades ago, and was very happy with the outcome. In a crowd of other Dommies, it never looked out of place.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I will publish a draft of the chart I'm working on in the June edition of Roadholder and invite comments and further options for inclusion - I'm aware that there are quite a few gaps that could do with filling. I am also trying to get RAL equivalents where possible because, as Peter H. has commented, the RAL system tends to 'standardise' things somewhat ... .

Thanks for the input from everyone; is there a specification sheet anywhere for the 1959 Forest Green colour?

Some paint suppliers may have the tech to read through the existing original paint. If anyone has had this done and has the data then it would be worth recording that also. It gives the size of flake, colour and how it is applied.

Hello Colin, what I've found so far is that 'Forrest Green'  is listed as RAL6001.

Rover Cameron Green B266 and Vauxhall Laurel 4635 are also suggested, both of these are very similar and slightly darker than RAL6001.

Hi,

I know that colour is a very subjective thing but I used a sample of original Forest Green on the inside of a chaincase and on the RAL colour chart RAL6002 Leaf Green was a lot more like it, to my eye anyway.
