Norton Dominator 88 Hepolite Piston

Forums

Hello,

Currently I am rebuilding my 1959 Norton Model 88. I need to replace the old seized piston but my luck is bad as I am not able to locate any new or good used hepolite/heplex pistons. I just found out that Norton Electra pistons has the same bore which is 66mm but the stroke is shorter. My question is can the electra pistons successfully fit into norton dominator 88 engine? will the height of the crown from the gudgeon pin hole is same as norton 88 pistons? please help me

P/S : If anyone has hepolite pistons for sale I can consider buying that too.

There must be plenty of odd used pistons laying around, it will depend on what size bore you have . If relined back to std you should find plenty to fit. Or am I a bit odd in never throwing anything away!!. Used pistons are often re-usable as its the rings wear the most. Some Triumph rings fit. My 99 has been running for donkeys on a pair of 650 pistons ,99 rings and gudgon pins from my old 88/99.

Hello Well from my engineering experience Norton original pistons where BHB pistons Hepolite came in on the aftermarket piston sales, and electra Pistons will have a shorter skirt to your model witch will not be suitable for cylinder control in layman's terms you have to much slap in the skirt piston are not straight from top to bottom they have a shape to them the the crown of the piston is thousands of an inch smaller then the bottom of the piston this gives the piston some control as it moving up and down is bore length at revs a piston moves up and down about 250 times per second and the skirt of the piston expands as it gets hot this is why there is piston clearances So then if you get your self a vernier caliper and measure from top to the bottom taking readings and writing them down you find your piston gets wider as you go down is length I have full technical data on pistons and On piston rings shapes there all different shapes and dimension and have different radius-is! from one maker to another GPM rings will not fit BHB or Hepolite pistons you have a lot to learn about pistons yours anna j

Hello Anna J

Thanks for your reply.

Do you have any BHP or Hepolite pistons for sale? I looking for +040, +030 or Standard Size pistons.

Or do you know where I can buy this pistons?

Thanks

You should be able to find them at RGM motors or Norvil or Andover Norton or JP Pistons (Australia). Not all sizes may be available. Good luck.

Have you tried these chaps: www.vintagemotorcyclepistons.co.uk? I managed to get the correct pistons for a t110 that no one else had.

NO its B-H-B not Bhp piston British heavy industries piston makers has made for Rolls Royce engines cars and aero engine iE the rolls royce Merlin engines fitted to the spitfire and hurricane and mosquito theseengines have all B.H.B pistons fitted ,and they won the darkness days of world war 2 in defence of our country, And only the very best engine components were fitted to Norton Singles and Twins, this is why these Norton,s have endured the test of time for over these passed 60 years and there still going strong as every they where and they still have a big desirability today yours anna j

Rgmnorton currently list standard size and +20,30,40,50 and even 60. Not new old Hepolite though.

If you have a spare standard 500 barrel you are a very lucky man!

these are all after market gardine pistons and do not have the same radiusis as the original piston have and gardine pistons are that bit heavier there ok if your having the barrel re-bored to the same radius as the pistons and rings dimensions and then the bore cross hatched finished to make a good job of it, barrels for 500 600 and 650 are hard to find and 600 and 650s are not the same as the 650 barrels are set back that bit more So you cannot fit 600 barrels on a 650 motor you end up doing damage to the motor but you can fit the 650 barrels on a 600 motor with no problems with 600 pistons there are different to the 650 pistons has 650 piston have shorter skirts and shaped up near the gudgeon pin hole , where as the 600 pistons are that bit longer skirts and have higher or lower compression ratios and the oil rings are also different like I have said you have a lot to learn about Norton twins pistons or you end up with a rattly motor that will not perform right ether to make a good job get the right parts there out there try finding them is half the fun , yours anna j

Just want to go off on a tangent but I am sure Anna will know this!

Is the AMC gearbox a direct replacement for the Laydown box.

i.e. will one fit directly without any engineering?

I ask this because I find the AMC box in my 1957 88, pic. attached. clunky and long lever travel compared to a 1955 Dommi I had many years ago. I would return it standard if it was ever to be sold.
