Norton day at Brooklands

Forums

Had a good morning and had several, very helpful, conversations regarding cammy singles. No-one seemed to mind as I scrabbled on the floor measuring their stands, either!

A couple of pictures, if you're interested:

Had a bit of trouble on the way home with a sticking carb slide. Recalling something similar years ago on my old RGS, I opened the tank to find the liner dissolving due to ethanol in the petrol. Great.

Ahh well, gives me something to do!

cheers

Great piccies as usual Paul. That twin with the blue tank looks ratherlike Ken Rawlinsons (aka R K Ick). Cr*p in the tank. I've told you before about pouring gloop in tanks. LOL x 10.

It wasn't me wot did it, Mike, it was the PO!

Yes, Ken was organiser in chief, I think, and was on good form , although disappointed at the turnout.

I thoroughly enjoyed the event, including a few blasts up the test hill! Having come up from Cornwall, I was impressed by the range of bikes the Surrey branch have, and their breadth of knowledge. I had interesting conversations with Ken, Bob and others whose names I didn't catch; all good stuff! As for the Brooklands Museum complex, having never been before, I thought it was brilliant. Not so brilliant was the fact that it appears the rest of Brooklands is owned and run by Mercedes...... ok, I won't say the obvious, but, who did?frown

Just an observation but, were it not for Mercedes' considerable input of cash and good faith, the whole Brooklands complex would have disappeared under a massive office/shop/commercial development. Just check out the other end of the site where you'll find a forlorn stretch of banked track as you make your way into either Tesco or M&S. It was a very close call!

I can't quite see what Mercedes have done to preserve anything. They have built over it, the same as everybody else. The section of the circuit adjacent their complex is being used as a car park; that is quite a forlorn, sad sight. There is no input of cash into that whatsoever; it is crumbling away, Good faith; where? Obviously the track has all but gone, or gone into disrepair, certainly from the point of ever being used again. The Museum area is the only part which now is of interest, and a good job they are making of it. I think you ever so slightly missed my point! Anyway, let us not debate it, and detract from the excellent effort put on by the Surrey branch, which resulted in an enjoyable day.

It was the first time I've been to Brooklands in about 8years and I thought it was a great day. Shame about the weather but I managed to get there and back in the dry, and went for a walk round the museum while it rained during the day.Another 150 miles on the ES2, next year I'll bring the Inter and have a go on the test hill!

Nice to meet a few more members but I have to admit, I'm terrible for having a conversation with someone, then walking away thinking 'I wonder who that was'. (I recognised Paul, he was the one one his hands and knees with a tape measure!)

It's a great day thats deffinately going in the callender for next year!

Thanks

Andy

Had a lovely day chatting my head off. Hope I was not too boring !. Ken was really interesting (and patient).Did not attempt the test hill as I found too many loose parts and problems arising from flogging the poor old Dommy the previous week. Think the 1959 mains are now ready for a change. Also managed to vibrate the charging system into submission on the way home.Dragged the Atlas out of its sawdust bed and fired it up in two kicks after a seven year layoff with the old fuel! ,they don't make stuff like that anymore.Nothing needs doing for the MOT. Cannot understand how the Atlas slips in and out of neutral no problem while the 99 will not even after playing with everything (clue in there somewhere).

'I can't quite see what Mercedes have done to preserve anything.'Well, they do work in close harmony with the museum trust, making their test track etc available for various museum events such as the Double Twelve and jointly hosting certain events. None of that would have been possible if the whole area had been given over to office/shop development which, at one time, looked extremely likely. I, for one, greatly prefer Mercedes' involvement in the site to the proposed alternatives.

And the owners cannot be blamed for not spending money on the tracks. They have problems with "English Heritage" who have 'listed' the test hill and banking - and won't allow it to be repaired because that would spoil its historical significance. So over the last 10 years it has become increasingly problematical even running safely back to the clubhouse from the test hill return track because the concrete slabs are getting worse every year. (Meanwhile most of our great cathedrals are entirely clad with new stone). But it was a good day out nonetheless...
