NOC Commando Service Notes

Forums

Hi, Vancouver B.C. calling. I have just had the good fortune to acquire a 1971 Commando in delapidated, garden shed condition. I want to start out on the right foot for an end to end restoration and have been told that the NOC Commando Service notes are of great help. Is it possible to acquire via the club, or would some kind soul copy and send on, all costs covered? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Peter, found and printed. Many thanks, looks like a mine of information. Tony

Hi had a look on Netherlands Norton owners site and downloaded and printed as per Tony - good read.

My question is this, where can I find this info on NOC website? seems bizarre to have to go to the Dutch site to obtain a NOC - originated document.

Is there any other good quality information out there that I am missing?

Please advise,

Best regards,

Chas

Hi Chas

The Commando Service notes were published initially some thirty or more years ago and although they're still very helpful were largely superseded by the 'Technical Digest' (TD3) published by INOA. This excellent compendium of Commando wisdom is still available to purchase in the NOC Shop.

Discussions are presently taking place between the NOC and the INOA to join forces in the production of an updated technical digest (TD4) which will include the best parts of the Commando Service Notes and include a review of more recent innovations in how to keep Commandos running sweetly. As members will imagine, this is no small task and made less straightforward by the requirement to maintain two translations - English and American?

This said, we can hopefully look forward to a 'World Class' updated Tech Digest in the future - there will certainly be a good market for it. The authors of the CSN could hardly have foreseen the coming of the Internet and for that reason, and until the publication of TD4 - members are recommended to purchase TD3 and/or download the scan of CSN available from our friends in the Netherlands.

There is a translation in the index of my Mk 3 Commando workshop manual. Some you won't forget, such as Petcock = petrol tap. Innocent

Also:

Wrench = Spanner

Flashlight = Torch

Fender = Mudguard

?? = Fortnight (not commonly used in the US)

?? = Loggerheads (not commonly used in the US)

Two countries separately by a common language - Churchill.

Yours Truly from the US

Hmmmmm, I have a couple of fender's, both have 6 strings on them. And don't forget the spanner / wrench sizes: Whitworth v AF.

Boot / Trunk

Bonnet / Hood

Windscreen / Windshield

Pavement (Beware) / Road, so keep to the sidewalk!

(I spend too much time Stateside, got to have a laugh)
