This could be a good thing but I find the engagement system on the Electra is the weak link. When I first restored the bike it would start some times on the starter now I don't bother with it. The starter spins ok but does not drive the engine long enough to fire up. A couple of days ago while cleaning oil from the clutch plates it seamed a good time to check the drive again. I put in a new wave spring from N O C when restoring, this time I just turned it around made it worse no engagement at all. Everything looks ok but I could be missing something. Good job it starts easy on the kick start Bryon

Hi Bryon,
Its some time since I looked at the mechanism - but it seemed simple enough at the time. Inertia vs. a wavy spring should induce the 'pawls' to poke out enough to engage, once the starter button is pressed. Once the engine fires, the ratchet on the crank pushes the pawls back home - again, against the resistance of the wavy washer.
If your pawls are not engaging, then something is preventing them from doing so. Sadly, its possibly like looking for a needle in a haystack. A piece of dirt causing 'stickiness'? A pin out of line? A snag somewhere (from wear)?
Anyhow - as you say, the Electra does not need a starter.The Commando - now that is another matter altogether!

You could try Micky the Wireman who has a stall at Kempton Park and I am sure he would be able to make you a wiring harness. His stall is inside the long building at the main entrance next to the chain suppliers in their red overalls.

Hi Bryon
The wave spring etc is the weak link but you cannot turn it around as this will stop the paws from moving if there is any wear on the slots the spring will need replacing . the clearances were so tight it all jammed against the crank bolt I had to get the head of the bolt machined and since all works 80% time and I tend to strip and clean in the winter ready for the next season also the woodruff key on the starter motor cog is weak any
slight movement and it sheers trevor
