New Amal Premiers - choke???

Forums

After much effort in giving the originals one last hurrah... I fitted new Amal Premiers to the Commando (930s)

What I cant work out is the Choke system... as doesnt seem to be behaving like I would expect it to, I have been through setup a few times now, choke slides are closing off evenly. It's probably my lack of understanding so hope someone can clarify.

When I go to start, If I tickle the carbs, activate choke lever into the relaxed cable position, turn ignition on and kick her over... she will start up first time... but run lumpy and try to cut out pretty quick (with choke on)... especially if I release the throttle revs back. But if I turn the choke off straight after starting.. and just hold the throttle revs for a couple of mins she will run smoother and then once warmed up idle good when releasing the throttle.

Needless to say as long as I flood the carbs it will start without any choke under the same process... as long as I hold the throttle revs up till she warms up.Kinda would prefer to be able to run with the choke on for a short period whilst it warms up (rather than hold throttle revs for a couple of mins) so am I doing something wrong here or does my bike just not like the choke?

Well A.J., the chokes are only to be used in conjunction with the ticklers to enrichen up the mixture to get the engine initiallyrunning, over use of choke will soot up the plugs,if it is running lumpy, it is telling youthere is too much fuel going into the cylinders! The choke does not replace the throttle opening for idle speedwhen started, that is up to the operator. You have really answered your own enquiry in your text.

Air+fuel+spark = go, so I would suggest that you'r running too rich with the choke on. The Amal chokedesign is perverse, when it's out the cable is stressed,if it fails the slides drop & engine performance suffers..

I removed my choke slideswhen in Spain (that's another story!),Nellie starts without a problem all year round(UK, East Mids), I blip the throttle a few times to say hi to my neighbours& then head off (personally I don't like to run air cooled engines for long periods when stationary). .

Just take them off, block the holes, & remove the cable/choke lever for that 'uncluttered' looksmiley

I have a newish single Premier 932 on my Commando 750 which has now done a 1000 miles of motoring. My bike starts very easily but does need full choke first thing in the morning. Otherwise it takes lots of flooding and kicks. Once running I can back off the choke completely and then like AJ hold on the throttle until the engine has warmed.

If I want to ride off immediately, I leave the choke on about 1/4 otherwise the engine will die at the first road junction. After half a mile it is choke fully off and away we go.

I have found that ignition timing and pilot jet setting are both critical to smooth running at low revs. Otherwise the engine is very lumpy on a closed throttle.
