Navigator rectifier wiring

After over 20 years I have finally got round to restoring my old Navigator, my first problem was finding I couldn't get a spark and on investigating I found that the original rectifier is going straight to earth, I looked for a replacement and took the clubs advice and went to A O Services who offered an excellent replacement, this however has four wires and not the three as the original, one to earth, two to alternator and one to battery which means that I do not have the brown feed to the coils as before, can you enlighten me as to the correct wiring please?

Sorry to ask but as I said, it is well over 20 years since I did anything with the bikes so like the bike I am a bit rusty.

Hello Howard,

That's good advice to ask Al Osborn. He is genuinely very helpful.

There appears to be something strange with your wiring. According to the wiring diagram (1961) the brown wire from the rectifier is the battery wire. The live feed to the ignition coils should be a dark green wire from the ignition switch.

Sorry I am wrong on two counts, it is the green wire and I should have asked Al but I thought it best to contact the club as you should know the bike inside out.

Will ask somebody else first in future.

Because I expected more help from the club!! I took advice from the club who advised me to contact "electrical" so I went straight to the electrical section on the club website thinking I would get good advice.

Al is the Clubs electrical expert! Cool http://www.nortonownersclub.org/membership/contacts/technical-contacts and as he sold it to you I'm sure he'll be happy to help.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your bike and have you looked to see how it compares? I doubt anyoneis going to tell you to connect a to b without understanding how your bike has been wired.It sounds like its non standard.

I've just rewired mine, it wasfairly easy and I'm no electrician but now I know its all ok.

All bridge rectifiers used on these machines ie Commandos Navy, Jubilees, Dommies etc are 4 terminal bridge rectifiers. The very common black 1 1/4 dia 3 terminal Lucas silicon rectifier.(and copy is a bridge rect Its bolt is its fourth terminal) This is the same configuration as the old Wipac 3" dia brownish thing, this also has three wires with the fourth terminal in the fixing bolt. They all have two alternator wire (either way round) and a Positive and a negative terminal that must be connected in line with the battery Positive and Negative.When you use the newer ENCAPSULATED rectifier these have the 4 terminals for you to connect as above.AL O

No unfortunately I don't have a diagram and am finding it hard to get one, but it wouldn't give me the connections for the rectifier I have purchased from Al @ A O because his has 4 connections where the original has 3, I asked AL to send me wiring instructions when purchasing but all he sent was a small diagram that I could have pulled from the internet giving me the 4 terminals layout. There are 2 connections for the alternator but to date I have no idea which wires!! As I have previously said in other posts, I haven't had anything to do with the bikes for over 20 years so I am a bit rusty.

Howard,

Al has just given an explanation above for wiring the rectifier and he very definitely knows his stuff.

Your old Wipac rectifier had three wires and earthed via it's fixing bolt. The new solid state rectifier four wires - so you use your three existing wires and add an extra wire to earth via the frame. You should have a brown wire, a green wire and a white wire. The brown wire goes to battery, the green and white wires go to the alternator. Use Al's diagram to identify the terminals on the rectifier. The Navigator is wired positive earth.

You mentioned previously about a wire to the ignition coils - there is no wire from the rectifier to the coils.
