Matthew,

New to Lightweights?

The Navigator and Jubilee before 1964 had a gearbox very similar to lightweight AMC models. The kickstart return spring was a wire form.

All Electra and later Navigator and Jubilee had a different gearbox with slightly larger mainshaft and a completely different gearchange and kickstart mechanism. The kickstart return spring was a flat strip form.

Different gearboxes, Different methods of pre-tensioning the spring.

Let us know what you've got.

The manual says "pull the spring around and engage in the in the casting". You would need superhuman strength for that, I found.

I found I can only do it with the inner cover taken off. Fit the kickstarter into the cover with the thick thrust washer behind it. Fit the spring. Using the kickstart lever, wind the spring up ½ to ¾ of a turn, and trap it there by feeding in the starter ratchet from the other side (not forgetting the spring behind). You may 2 pairs of hands make it easier, Once the ratchet traps the kickstart, satisfy yourself you have enough pre-load & re-assemble the inner cover.
