Navigator front fork springs and clutch bearing cage

Forums

Hi learned Navigator experts! I have a late 1964 Norton Navigator in very original, unmolested condition that I am doing a rolling restoration on. Two spares are eluding me. First are front fork springs - mine are past their best - the only source I can find for springs is Norvil who offer springs for the short Roadholders which will fit but are also for Dominators. My understanding is that Navigator and Electra springs were the same length as Domi' springs but different spring rating to reflect the lighter weight of the bike and were identified by a dab of green paint. Is there a source of genuine Navigator fork springs out there or do the Dominator springs work fine? Second spare is the metal cage for the clutch roller bearings for the post Engine number 106838 which saw the later gear box introduced from the Electra and I assume clutch introduced in 1964. Norvil and other sources offer a cage for the light weight clutch (part 040367) which looks identical but is bigger than the one on my bike. I presume this is for the earlier gear box / clutch combination? Does anyone know a source for this roller bearing cage for the later Jubilee / Navigator / Electra clutch? many thanks for the help! Nick

Hello there,

I doubt if we qualify as Navigator expert but I do agree with your observations about the fork springs. They are very similar to the Dominator but they were fractionally shorter and lighter. I do not know of any source for the correct spring so the Dominator may be your only option if your original springs are definitely dead.

The 1959 Spares List and the 1961/62 Spare List both quote the roller cage part number as 20974 - not 04367 as stated by Norvil. Again I don't know of any sources.

Have you tried contacting Andy S ?

Too modest! Thanks for that part number and spring info Patrick, very useful, I will email Andy and seek his advice. My springs are about 1/2" shorter than the Norvil quoted length for the Domi springs - sadly one is quite badly corroded and although very subjective the bike has always looked very slightly low at the front with very little fork movement which was one of the reasons, along with leaking seals I stripped them down. I'm minded to try the Norvil springs and see how she rides - if I do I will report back! As for the bearing cage mine is obviously worn but usable so not a show stopper.

Warm regards Nick
