hi two question if anyone can help On the late gearbox (navigator) i have been trying to build up gearbox but do not have camplate plunger or spring ,these are not listed in spares does anyone know if general amc plunger and spring fit. Also the large timing side seal washer in spares does this go between timing side main bearing and crank case?

Hi Keith, I haven't tried these myself but I noticed recently Norvil list a camplate plunger described as 'fits most bikes' part number 040034 (£7.50 ex VAT) which they show as fitting the Lightweight twins and the spring that goes inside it as part 040442 (£1.20 ex VAT) although the catalogue doesn't list it as fitting although it does fit inside 040034 as does the one on the Navigator so perhaps it does! Worth a phone call to Norvil to see if they will fit the later gearbox. For info the correct part numbers are Plunger: 048177 and spring: 040045. Good luck and let us know if they fit! As for the timing side assembly details you will find The Maintenance Manual & Instruction Book for the Jubilee, Navigator and Electra sold by the NOC shop as a photocopy or perhaps better still the one published by VelocePress ISBN 1-58850-069-1 shows you everything you need to know about the Navigator including the later gearbox.

Thanks for reply Nick i did ring Norvil but the chap said he didnt know but I may buy one and take a punt. I am trying to build this later engine as I have lots of bits including a new reground crank assy to put in my early model navigator which needs a new set of crankcases,I have been running it for several years but crank case is badly cracked in several places and leaks badly so will try and build this later one so i can still use the old one and then swope engines maybe next year. Thanks Keith

The navigator and jubilee did share parts from AMC so it is possible that they would fit if you get stuck.

Thanks dan will try it, I have all the bits to build the gearbox except the spring and plunger. Dan can I ask do you know if measuring the hole centres on the con rod at 4 and 5/16 (per history article) is the best way to id navigator conrods as apposed to jubilee ones, I have a good set but dont know for sure if they are navi except that the hole centres do measure correct. Thanks for your time Keith

Keith, you might try Russell Motors in Battersea, London 02072281714. I needed some late, rare Navigator clutch parts and they had them. You will need to phone, explain what you are after and then write giving the part numbers so they can search through their warehouse. They only accept payment by cheque so a wonderfully old fashioned set up! For all of that I was amazed by how quickly and efficiently they turned my order round. Good luck with the rebuild - in my experience the later gearbox is far better.

Hello Keith,

I see that you have an early model Navigator and you are thinking about fitting the later engine unit. If you do this you need to fit the later central channel section in the frame as the bolt holes in the later crankcase won't match to the original channel section.

Dan's your Man for explaining this better as he has already done this.

Patrick.

I have found out through these helpfull messages that the early frame needs amending to take the later engine and that you have done this on a bike any help or advise would be much appreciated thanks Keith

Hi Keith, itâs pretty much as Patrick says, I think all I had to change was the centre channel frame section, (it unbolts), as mine was all in bits it was easy to do. I bought a frame section from the club spares (they are still in stock for £15!) You will also need the longer engine mounting studs and shouldered nuts, although I think I just used washers!

Iâll have a look in my stash to see if I have a spring and plunger.
