More Questions after 'Oil in Bath'

Forums

Many thanks to all who responded to my 'Oil in Bath' question. The response has been rapid and informative from all. It seems like I've joined a good club. Now for some more questions:

Can I buy all the parts for a Model 50 Clutch ('59 bike) ? If so, where do I shop ?

What size is the central clutch retaining nut ? (Sorry if teminology is a bit 'dodgy'.)

Where is the best place to obtain Norton parts ? I'm near to Britbits. Are they any good ?

I assume many of you have converted to 12 V ? Is it expensive ? Where do I get the bits to do it ?

What about electronic ignition ? Worthwhile ? Best kit ?

The bike I purchased has no choke fitted and seems to start OK (but it is summer !). Obviously the carb. is equipped to accomodate this. Should I fit one ?

All for the moment !

Regards,

Mike Haworth

I can't answer all your queries, Mike, but on the matter of converting to 12V have you considered LED's (cheaper option)? As for the choke my view would be that if it is part of the design then you need one. If it is starting without choke it may be that the pilot jet is set a bit rich. George

Not sure if yours has a Norton or AMC clutch, but they are interchangeable, sadly not many of the parts are. All AMC clutch bits are available from RGM, Norvil or Andover Norton. I get most of my bits from RGM, Good to deal with and no prob getting refunds if bits don't fit etc. Andover are also good to deal with but seem to be a bit more expensive but the quality Is very good. You've really got to make your own mind up! If you can get to London Russell motors are also good but don't have Internet etc, a proper old biker garage!

Alan Osborne is the guy to speak to and get bits for the electrics he's listed on the website. But should also come up on a Google search.

I'd say get the bike running well and check the plug before worrying about the choke, it was common to remove them back in the day, you just needed to flood the carb when the bike was cold.

Best to fit the choke set up, that's the way they were designed. You don't have to use it, but, if the choke is removed, plug the cable entry hole on the carb top.
