Model 18 Part Identification

Forums

Be grateful if someone could identify the purpose of the marked threaded attachment just behind the cam chain cover on this 1936 model 18. I've not had it running yet and the machine came with nothing attached here. The various manuals I have are silent on this. Many thanks.

On the ES2, John, that connection holds a short length of copper tube which drains oil from the magdyno chain compartment. The oil enters via the bush holding the cam shaft for the inlet pushrod. George

Thanks George, and David for the picture.. Did later versions have the means of draining the chain compartment back into the sump, I wonder.. Seems a bit of a design oversight to need a separate drain..

A yoghourt pot painted black with a hole through the lid and some tape round the pipe (or other device) to hold the lid on the pipe then click the pot up onto the lid (round the drain pipe) and hey presto! A drain pot! George

The magneto chain cover doesn't have a gasket face and the drain simply ensures that any oil which finds its way into the bottom will not smear out and blow back over the engine. If the bush is in good condition, it won't be more than a drop that you can wipe off with the tip of your finger at the end of a run. If it's more than that then bush or cam spindle need replacing.

Linking it to the crankcase would probably mean that you pumped more oil in the opposite direction, regardless of any one-way valve.

It's a 1930s motorcycle that was a little old-fashioned even in its day. Not so very long before, total loss oiling was the norm. Nobody worried about breathers or overflows which exited onto the road.

On David's photo, you'll also see that the 16H had one from the chamber around the tappets which drained any oil which came up the tappet guides - again, it shouldn't be much.

And I thought that it was to let the water out which gets in between the mag and the back of the chain case when going through deep fords (500T)!

Thanks George, I remember Valerie Singleton coming up with the same solution...

You're right Richard, a product of its era. Your informative posts are a great help to Norton newbies... thanks..
