Model 18, ES2 big end replacement

Forums

Hi all, just aquired a 55 19s with a 51 18 engine in it. Much missing but ive stripped the engine and the end is shot.Anyone changed an end. Ive done my bsa m21 but that has tapered ends so is easier to fit. I believe the norton is parallel. Any advice on removal, and truing would be useful. thanks colin eggleton.

Hi Colin, unless you 're an engineer with all the kit (press, gauges, knowledge etc) then I would entrust that job to someone who is. Mike Pemberton (singles expert) did my Model 18 and found all sorts of bodges and 'workarounds' with the crankpin and flywheels. I mean, if that bit's not right, nothing is....

Hi adam, yes to most of the bits ie press, aircraft engineer, lathe etc, just wondered if theres any little quirks. Bsa give all the details and tolerances for there singles but norton always seem a bit lean on real information. Most manuals say return to factory. I will just see what its like when i true it up. Thanks colin.

Hi Colin

I did the big end on both my inter and my ES2. I found that when the outer was pressed into the conrod it no longer fitted over the rollers properly so I had to get it honed out. Other than that just take your time and get it as close to perfect as possible. The book 'tuning for speed' has a lot of info on this sort of thing and when following the instructions in that I tried up the flywheels on some knife edge rollers I managed to get both sets I did to within less than half a though surprisingly quickly and easily.

Good luck

Hi andy,i have the tuning for speed book so i will have a look. I did my m21 big end some years ago and yes,the outer did shrink when pressed into the conrod.I trued the bsa up with one flywheel held in a lathe chuck and trued the other one to it. As i said before norton always seemed so say return to your dealer or such. The bsa was quite straight forward so as you said, just take my time. Cheers, colin.

Andy - quite happily replacing my big end on my es2. But. How the hell do you hold the bottom row of rollers whilst you spin the rod over the top row? I've tried grease, wire and even a cable tie to hold them on....I'm going doolally trying! All the best.
