Many thanks for the replies. I had looked through the Mk3 wiring diagram for the fuse symbols prior to the post, but of course nothing to be seen. From the info you have passed onto me the fuse holders are clearly an after market addition to the standard loom. I shall keep the holders as they are and put the appropriate sized fuses in each.
The front brake lever has been cable-tied as close as I can get it to the handlebar and the rear brake pedal has sufficient weight bearing down on it to keep a constant pressure on the fluid in the system. Hopefully flushing the air out, fingers crossed. If not then a strip down and start again.
