Mercury Brake light switch.

Forums

I would like to replace the brake light switch on my Mercury. Would it originally have been fitted with a Lucas switch number 31383, or the more button-like switch, fitted to some Commando models? I have looked at many Mercury photographs, but it's hard to see which switch was originally fitted. I hope someone can help, Joff Clinkard.

Dear Fritz, I had a feeling that I'd read about this on the messages site before, but recent searches I made didn't pick it up. Really interesting to read the links you sent. The always on, set up makes good sense and from the photo therein looks very tidy. Thank you for your help in this,

Joff.

I've entered ?brake AND switch? in the search box to find the threads with the appropriate topic.

The correct switch is availiable now from several sources. Many years ago when the only switch made was the wrong type and sold by a Norton dealer with the instruction" mount it upside down" !!. I dismantled one and reconstructed it with solder and rivets, its still working 25 years on.

Jonathan I believe the correct switch fitted was the Lucas Model 118SA Part Number 3415A. It was a fragile plastic device with a rubber cover covering the plunger-type switch. It was adopted in 1967 for the Atlas engined Matchless Hybrid Models and then used on the Mercury. On my own Mercury I have fitted the older Lucas metal Model 22B that was fitted to the Atlas and 650SS models. It works satisfactorily but does look aged. Cheers, Howard

Thankyou Robert, you made a good job of that switch. These parts are certainly much easier to come by now. Regards, Joff.

Dear Howard, Good information thank you. I am inclined to do exactly the same as you, the 118SA switch seems to have a pretty bad reputation and when correctly fitted, the 22B looks tidy enough.

All the best, Joff.
