Mercury advance retard lubrication

Forums

Is there any way that the advance retard behind the Lucas 6CA contact breaker on my 1970 Mercury can be lubricated without removing the circular points baseplate? Bearing in mind that the motor is running beautifully and I would rather not have to set up the points again from scratch. Just hoping that there is a lazy way of carrying this out. I regularly read and enjoy the messages section on the site and hope someone can help. All the best, Joff.

This type of thing I use a cocktail stick dipped into the appropriate lube then poked into the pivot point that needs it. Are you having a lack of lube issues? or are you on a maintenance regime??

Thank you Jon. It's some time since the advance/retard had any oil, so it's a delayed maintenance regime. The cocktail stick plan sounds good, it's just whether there is a way to get through the baseplate without removing it. I fear I'm clutching at straws really and need to bite the bullet and take out the whole points unit. I just thought that someone must have had the same idea and just might have found a fiendish solution. Regards, Joff.

you could just give it a tiny squirt with an aerosol of maintenance lube through the gap next to the cam. wipe off what drains out.

Hello David, thanks for the reply. There does seem to be a gap around the cam, so based on your idea, if I buy a suitable aerosol of light oil and attach the fine tube to the button, like on a can of WD40. Maybe, tuck some cloth or tissue into most of the gap in order to control any blowback, then give it a one second blast. On running the motor, centrifugal force should throw some of the oil out to lubricate the weights and gubbins. It's the best idea yet. At some stage the points will need attention and I will do a proper job.

All the best, Joff.
