M50 crank bearing spacer

Forums

Hi there, can anyone advise me with the spacer which fits between

the two drive side bearings on a 1961 model 50, this spacer has a

oil feed groove around the outside with four notches cut out in the

side wall which I assume is for lubrication to the outer bearing,

does this spacer fit with the notches facing away from the

flywheel and towards the engine sprocket.

also is there such thing as torque wrench setting s for the

cylinder head bolts, if so does anyone know what they are.

Thanks Mick Downes.

Hi Mick, funny I should read your request as I am waiting for a reply from RGM on this and the overall thickness of the spacer.

Will let you know what they say. (59-63 singles)

Hi Neil, thanks for your reply, yes I would be very grateful

if you could let me know when you've heard from RGM.

Thanks Mick.

Mick,

Lawrence at RGM said he would come back to me as soon as he gets time.

My new Big end came this morning, next day delivery from Alpha Bearings.

Mick,

RGM do not stock this part and they have no information on it.

I'm on the case and will report back when I have more information. We will get there and it might be another entry for that unobtainable parts list spread sheet our EC should be developing.

The part is: Mainshaft bearing distance piece: 12794

No good without one!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: The Alpha big end and my rod are going back to Dudley as the new bearing is a couple of though over size.

Hi Michael

I think that the spacer you refer to is fitted with the four cut-outs facing the crank shaft (to allow oil to the outer bearing)........the cy/head bolts from memory are 34 f/ lbs...........Ring M P the singles guru to confirm, or better still get the Pushrod Single Engine Rebuild by Mike Pemberton. (All the information you require is included, and more) from the club shop

John, I asked Mike, myself as first call but he had just come out from hospital.

If anyone has the distance piece then perhaps they could photograph it and measure it. No problem to make them then...

Neil,

Happy to send you one over to copy if this will help. I'm surprised it's a rare part as the same part is listed in my 1946 parts book right through to my 1960 parts book. Part number still listed in 1960 as A2-33 (the original no.) now superceded and new part no. 12794. Same part used for all s.v. and o.h.v. singles.

Let me know if this will help. I still have your address.

Hi John and Neil, Thanks for the info, I have fitted the spacer OK

will try to get the manual you suggested, and good luck Neil

with your bearings. Cheers Mick Downes.

Glad you are fixed up Mick.

Sent my rod and Alpha big end bearing back to Dudley, a real pain.

Ian, you are a real gem. My problem is that this engine came without mains, otherwise the spacer would have been there and it would be a last resort to strip a good working engine just to measure this bearing distance piece! Could you possibly just measure the width for me? I know what it looks like. I think it will be around 5/16" but will need to be exact for end float tolerance.

Hope your break up North went well, Neil.

Neil,

Yes it did, it's now back to the cold. Hasn't exceeded 10C all week but did get out on the Commando today.

I have three of these spacers not currently in engines. All have the same o.d. and i.d.'s but 2 measure up at 0.355" wide and the third is 0.268" (a little over 17/64 inches wide). One has milled sections at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock and two have 6 equidistant holes around the circumference. Holes measure 0.191"(or 11 gauge)

Let me know if you need any other data.
