Lucas - dead Model 88

Forums

Have posted a query in the Electrical section (lengthy explanation there)but now a couple of queries for wider audience.

I'm no auto/mc electrician so do it all by the manual wiring diag. Suggestion is that the diag for '62 88 etc has a fault. Any ideas?? copies of a revised one?(other than the head/tail lamp internal switch diagwhich is wrong).

Also, maybe a stupid question, can a 6v coil and the alternator (47122A) die if in situ but unused for years????. How would I test these?

as always, advice and help appreciated.

regards John

well yes coils can die after not been used for some time but there a easy way of testing them , all you need is a battery and two wires with small crocodile clips on each end chip one to positive and the other to negative chip the negative to battery and positive end use as to simulate the points on the battery end a HT lead and spark plug and wire too a steel plate from the negative side of the battery , just tap the positive end clip on the battery and with the spark pug lieing on the steel plate you should get a spark , so then you know that the coil is not a dead one, so them you work you way back to the ignition switch checking the wiring with a test light you may find it could all down to a earthing wire in the head lamp as the earth is positive, and for a test on the alternator you need green and black and green and yellow to a bulb to test light or a Digital multi meter set on 12v you should get a reading of .7.5 to 8 volts with the engine running , and when running you engine in a garage you need it well ventilated and a fan running to cool the engine ,and all way think safety first, like a clear working area do not work with clutter on the floor or the area were you be working, all way have a safe working space, and all ways set up the tools you need before hand, so its Safety First When Men in Sheds or Garages or workshop , so think before stating work on your machines, so have fun yours anna j
