Loud exhaust/reprogram?

Anyone who has added the optional exhaust from Norton or modded their exhaust to breathe better, my question is did you have to reflash the ECU or reprogram / change the fuel mapping, electronics to get the bike to run correctly or is their a procedure the dealer must do as many other modern bikes require?

I've fitted the twin optional silencers from Norton which lookvirtually identical to the originals. Just a straighforward swop - the mountings are exactly the same. Nothing else required and bike seemsto breathe better - or perhaps it's just the better sound , but either way performance remains no different. Louder but not excessively so and just right for the 961 in my view.

There are two louder silencer options from Norton - the twin ones I've fitted and then there's a single two-into-one short silencer that I'm led to believe is significantly louder although haven't heard it myself.

I had the short "silencers" fittedby the factory at the first service - fantastic sound and look much better in my opinion. They are still 2 into 2 and have exactly the same fixings. I was told the ECU needed remapping. Sean Kynnersley will have the definitive answer.

My belief is that the ECU does need to be reprogrammed when the optional exhausts are fitted. I've ordered mine which will be fitted at the first service, a moment I'm looking forward to! laugh

My new louder long chrome pipes were fitted by the factory a couple of weeks ago at the same time as the first service. The ECU thingyunit under the seat hump was plugged into and a new program down loaded into it to suit the new set up.The Norton 961 sport now sounds wonderful just like a British bike should do.I would recommend all owners to have this done at the factory.Oh and buy the £90 work shop servicemanual as well its stuffed full of detailed information and will be a big help if one needs to work on the bike in future years.

I can vouch for the Workshop manual Dave. Alas I'm going to have to wait for the pipe etc until I take delivery next year. Can't wait.

What's the bike like now with the louder (Long) pipes fitted? Apart from the sound what other effects can you feel?

Numbing of the brain perhaps?

Update on this topic ! I have learned much since my original post. It seems the short factory pipes will require a re-map while the longer ones which have more back pressure run ok on some bikes, others may require a flash. There is the US ( non-factory ) long pipes that I put on mine that seem to run perfect. This is especially important for US / Canadian owners because it seems Norton does not yet offer maps for the North American tune ( emissions ) !

I have the short pipes fitted to my SE and they sounds like all the gods of thunder! The nearest comparison would be 1970,s Ducati,s with loud pipes.

to me the Norton with short pipes reminds me of those early Ducati,s (which I used to have) very visceral and very addictive and I absolutely love it.
