Loss of power and difficulty in getting first gear

Good Evening,

I have always gone for pre war singles! but i have now taken the decision to buy a 500cc dominator Model 7 (Dated 1960). I took it out for its first ride today and noticed it had a couple of problems;

1. Loss of power 

2. 1st gear very hard to engage 1st gear

Before i start looking into the problems is their anything that i should look for in this model

I suffer both of these issues on my pre /fbed  Model 50 (1957)

The power side is just about fixed after going one size up on the main jet (210 on model 50)

I then, after seeing some improvement with the jet, moved the needle to the richest setting.

I think I'm just about there, but at some point I may change the slide to a No3.  But a big improvement already.

Selecting first gear has become more difficult with a warm engine especially. Reducing play at the hand lever has helped a little, but I may have to take the clutch apart. All gears are there if selecting by hand, A stronger foot perhaps?

Hi Steve,  how does the loss of power manifest itself ?, starts off ok but  goes off as it heats up?. Could be tight valve clearances or tight valve guides. Could be a mag that fades when hot. We are going to need more clues . Clutch is probably dragging , warped plates , bad spring adjustment ,worn hub , tight chain, sloppy bearing , too much oil, wrong oil,tired spider allowing clutch to load up the sleeve gear , bad pawl spring,box timing, --thats enough for now !!.

First thing I'd look for with power loss is magneto timing. If it's not far enough advanced it will be hot and sluggish.

Is the clutch release lever moving enough to release it properly? The cable needs to have only minimum play and the lever on the spiral scroll release has to move enough. I had a lever slipping once, cured by opening the slot slightly using junior hacksaw.
