Lightweight Side Stand Trauma!

Forums

Arrrgh!  I've just lashed out £160+ on a 'proper' new 22611 side stand and 22610 stud from the NOCshop for my Navigator, only to find that on fitting it the mounting lug rotates slightly under the weight of the bike even when the stud is nipped up tight.  When the leg is extended fully forward it's at an angle that can't support the bike.

Pictures attached - have I mounted it incorrectly?  Is there a part missing? I sincerely hope so.

I know that alternative side stands have been discussed ad-nauseum in previous posts over the years, so no need to repeat all those pearls of wisdom thanks.  Rather I'd be grateful for your laser-focussed comments on the correct way to securely mount the 22611 stand so my bike doesn't end up on it's side!  Thanks in advance for your advice!

p.s. Yes, the spring is temporary, pending the right one coming.

Hi Nick,

On your first photo it appeared the the face on the inside of your stand bracket is plain. Strange if it is.

The original design had a ledge that was a tight fit against the lower frame.

Back of envelope sketch attached.

The distance between hole centre and top of ledge on bracket has to be just right to prevent the rotation you are seeing.

Can you confirm ledge feature missing?

Don’t know if these pics help - original ss, fitted well and no “swivelling”. Did find the leg was too forward, dropped a bead of weld on the bracket to stop the leg going too far and Jub sits at a good angle now.

Thanks Bruce,

Ledge feature is at top, not bottom of bracket as I remembered. Or miss-remembered.

Nick should be on the right path now.

Aha!

Bruce, Peter - thank so much you for your comments, they've helped me identify the problem.  See attached photos.

I've removed the stand and there's a casting flaw on the bracket ledge, just where you don't want a casting flaw!  I did notice it when I was spraying it black, but didn't realise it was critical. This explains why the bracket can rotate on the stud - there isn't enough of the ledge remaining to hold it firmly in position.

NOCshop shows they have 15 of these stands in stock, (not surprised given the price), so hopefully they can find a good one to rob for me!

... a Kawasaki (I think) stand which cost me less than £20 and a few hours fettling on my similarly framed Francis-Barnett:

Can you show how you attached yours, please? You are right, the frames are very similar! Cheers

PS - I think the Navi one might need to be more forward, as the engine is much heavier - but it would be good to compare.

Al Oz & I looked at this problem a few years ago and came to the conclusion that the bracket/lug angle was incorrect. The ones being sold then had an angle of 117°, while we felt that 125° would be more suitable. I wonder what angle Nicks bracket is?

.... but as far as I can remember I just made a plate out of 3/16" mild steel which fitted over the footrest stud and (possibly) the rear frame section mounting. This might make it clearer.

I had previously used a similar stand for my ES2 (2nd pic) and that worked very well.

Attached is a photo of the side stand bracket on my Navigator.  Shows a lip over the top of the lower frame tube. I find that the stand allows the bike to lean just a little too much, I think the easiest way to sort that is to make a new mount. Also, the stand is a little awkward to get at when folded away.  Has anyone attached an extension that makes the stand easier to get at with the foot?
