Leaky petrol taps

I don't seem to be able to get the taps to seel properly on my International. It is the join between the large 'cup' and the bottom of the tank that is permenantly leaking out past the threads. I've tightened them up onto the fibre washers as much as I dare and I'm wondering if the bottom of the tank isn't quite flat so I'm not pulling up on a flat face.

Without starting another debate about fuel quality and the various aditives in it, can anyone suggest a way of getting this to stop? Is there anything I could smear on the thread before doing it up? My ES2 and Royal Enfield are absoloutly fine but I can't get this joint to seal (on either tap) on the Inter.

Thanks

Hello,

Don't know what International taps and tank are like but are Dowty washers any use?

For sealing threads I use PTFE tape, apart from going from white to clear when in contact with petrolit seems to be unaffected.

Frequently a problem I gather, probably due to the wide diameter plus the fact that the tank base is usually far from dead flat. There is no doubt a suitable Dowty washer out there somewhere but I think it would be expensive in small quantities. A sealant solution would be indicated , e.g.:-

Loctite 5926; it says it's unsuitable for fuel systems but it works for me on petrol tap threads.

Loctite 5920; it says it's unsuitable for continuous immersion in petrol but again, it has worked for me.

There may be others in the range more fuel resistant if you have the time to search around.

I find 'Stat-o-Seals' to be the best thing in this application as they are less dependent upon being overtightened.

Any Norton / Triumph dealer selling the 'BAP' type fuel taps should have them.

Thanks for the replies. The problem with dowty washers and stat-o-seals is that the thread is probably 1.25inchs in diameter so cant get them big enough. I've ordered some of the loctite Chris sugested so I'll see if that helps.

Thanks again

Andy
