Hi people, anyone know if the laydown mainshaft is the same as a dolls head/upright mainshaft. My 53 es2 is a recent purchase and the shaft is bent on the clutch end. Only just got it back on the road since 84.
Thanks,colin.

Hi paul, thanks for the reply. I did wonder before i brought one from the spares guys. as you said the part nos are different. I said it was bent on the clutch end but it could be in between the bearings i suppose. Would give the same effect. How long its been bent i will never know but was laid up in 84 and im only just putting it back on the road.maybe the reason the clutch roller bearing inner bearing track was like a 50p piece! thought it was the primary chain until i fitted the new one. damm! thanks again. have to rip it out i guess and find a fly press. cheers.colin.
Hi Colin, this has been discussed before on the forum, but from memory, they are different lengths, hence the different part numbers. But, I have successfully straightenedseveral in the press that have been bent on the clutch end so don't discard it yet. Those case hardened shafts have a 'memory' andcan be pushed back to their original shape.

In reply to Paul, i clocked up the mainshaft and found it was running 0.030 thou out. I managed to get it to within 0.004 thou by putting a big v block in my vice { its a big one } and using an alloy bar in the center, i was able to tease it back. Thanks for that as i wouldnt have tried it if you hadnt said about it. It runs pretty good now.

Thanks for postingthe result Colin, I have had them with a lot more than a.030" bend, and they all come out pretty good with a bit of pushing (and patience) .I often wonder how many have been ditched and replaced with new in bygone days. I always have blamed bump startingcombined withreleasing the clutch too quickly and not using the de-comp lever as the possible main cause of bent main shafts.
