Laydown gearbox clutch friction plates

Forums

Dear Members,

I have a '53 Inter with a laydown gearbox and recently noticed that the clutch had started to slip. I dismantled it and observed that the inserts were considerably worn but not enough for the friction plate to make metal to metal contact witht the plain plate.

The exploded view in my P L Garratt manual does not give a part number but that diagram looks to be almost the same as that in my '59 spares list catalogue (albeit that is an AMC box). The part number quoted in the latter is 21259. Is it the same component or not and does any member have any recommendations as to where I can buy the correct plates?

Regards,

Peter Bolton

As far as I'm aware the clutch plates are all the same. I've swapped plates to my WD16H, Dommie and Manx with spare ones I've got. I have noticed that these new plates are a bit thicker and I couldn't fit all the new plates in. I had to swap a few for some old ones that were still usable.

In my 1950 parts book it says A2/393 for the friction plate. This means nothing to me and probably not to any shop these days. Here's a plate on ebay and they are availabe from all the usual Norton parts dealers.

I don't seem to have any luck with the NOC club spares, I tried for ages to buy some WD16H crank cases that were listed. After weeks of e-mails, I was told "They're in a lock up garage, I'll have to go down and find them". I never heard anything else. I gave up and got my original ones welded and machined. Maybe things have changed in the last few years..??

Fair enough!

Thank you for the direction to A2/393 - it is listed in the heavy twins but I did not see it in the singles. Wherever possible I support the club spares system because it generally represents better value.

They're listed at the bottom of page 18 on the singles list. It's the same plate so it doesn't matter what list you find it onsmiley
