Jubilee rear mudguard position

Forums

When I bought my Jubilee it had no tin ware including no mudguards.

I want to fit an alloy rear mudguard but I have no reference point for the height of the mudguard above the rear wheel. I am using standard 18" rims and tyres. I have a mudguard bracket below the swing arm so that gives me the lower fixed point.

What I need to know is the distance from frame stud 20 (the last one away from the tank under the seat) vertically to the mudguard at that point. An approximation will do.

I am making up stays as the standard ones won't fit.

Many thanks,

Dennis

Hello Dennis,

It is difficult to see the mudguard at this point on my Standard Navigator without taking off the seat; so just looking in from the side (with the oil tank in the way) I would say there there is only about enough room to slide your fingers between the top of the (standard painted ) mudguard and the underside of the frame stud you mention - maybe slightly less. I can't be precise as there are too many items (underseat tool box for one) in the way even to get fingers to it. Maybe someone else can give you better info.

But surely as you are fitting a non-standard alloy mudguard you can fit it to please yourself. Have you managed to get one to suit the 18" wheel - most I have seen claim to be 18/19 universal fitting which means they fit neither properly !. It also depends on what seat you are fitting as well.

Patrick, Thank you for the information it is a great help. Yes, I can adjust the non-standard mudguard to fit but I want to make sure that it is high enough not to foul the wheel when the shocks are fully compressed. I am hoping that is at the height of the standard mudguard as it is not easy to guage the full travel of the shocks under load.

You are also correct about the compromises of a mudguard that is claimed to fit 18/19 in wheels. I found a 5 inch wide 53 inch long mudguard from Feked that might fit.

Hi Dennis,

It should look good with alloy mudguards. Make sure they are well polished and don't worry too much about what was original. Build it to your own specs/ideas and enjoy it.

My Yamton (1959 Jubilee with Yamaha 400 engine) was originally built by me as a Cafe Racer about 30 years ago and it had polished alloy mudguards, chrome headlight, Commando pea-shooters, Norton race seat, & clip-ons; and it did look as good as it performed. It looked like a real Norton (a road Manx) should !!. I've recently put all the original De Luxe bodywork/seat/bars back; I had it at a local show a couple of weeks ago and people passed nice comments about seeing a nice original Jubilee again but it isn't half as much fun on the road as it was in Cafe Racer trim !.
