Jubilee fork oil leak

Forums

Ive noticed a small oil leak from both forks. Its not from the fork seals or the drain off screws at the bottom of the fork legs. It appears to be coming from around the hub spindle nut at the very bottom of the fork legs. Has anyone had this problem.

John.

Ah, sorry - don’t know much about the early type, the later “square” bottomed have spring/damper locking bolts from under the fork ends that needs to seal (similar to most piston rod fork types) but I think the earlier “round” ones are “blind” under the bottom and rely on a side bolt spring/damper fixing which has a small seal washer on them.

Sorry can’t help much more than that!

... as Francis Barnett forks as I had fitted to my 1955 Cruiser. A very poor design IMO.

The only place they can leak from at the bottom other than the drain screw is the bolt that secures the damper post (onto which the fork spring is screwed). You'll see this bolt on the inner side of both forks - its boss acts as a brake plate stop on that side. There should be a fibre washer under the head but I used a thin smear of silicone on the threads as well.
