Ignition timing (again)

Forums

Hi guys, Me again. I have read everthing I can find about the ignition timing for my 16H, it has a 1937 engine and all the books etc say the timing is 7/32" before TDC, Why? all the other measurments ie; tappets, valve timingare the same as the later engines, I thought apart from minor details the engines where the same for the life if the 16H!! The trouble is there is a lot of differance between a 37' engine (7/32") and later engines 39' ? which are set at 7/16 BTDC. I know I keep on about it, it's just that I don't want to damage the engine by using the wrong settings. Any thoughts will be welcome please, cheers Tony.

My 1944 WD16H (1937 design) is tuned to 7/16 with no issue.

It has even been suggested to me that they can be tuned at up to 45 degrees BTDC, then ride it and mark the advance position's where it works best. The suggestion being that the normal advance is good up to around 50MPH, over that a bit of extra advance can be a good thing. I haven't tried that yet though.
