Girder fork steering column lock nut 1936 ES2

Forums
Gents, I'm trying to locate a Front girder fork steering column lock nut for my 1936 ES2. I've struck out at all the places I've contacted in the UK. The Norton part number is 3528, but I also see it listed as 9283.I have measured the male threads on my steering column and the OD of that area is 1.125" with a measured thread pitch of 28 threads per inch. The photo attached shows the nut, with no steering damper tyhrough hole installed. Any one in the club know where I may get on of these? Thanks in advance for the help.Paul AbbottAttachments forkcrown-locknut-jpg

The parts books for 1937 and 1938 give the 3528 number which was also utilised on the WD machines. The earlier book which seems to cover 1933 - 35 states 9283 but the fork stem was unaltered so the change is presumably not significant.

Incidentally, the WD 16H parts books can be quite useful as they generally state thread size and form. That of the 3528 lock nut is given as 1 1/8" x 26 tpi.

There are a couple of Greek sellers on eBay who are regularly dismanting WD16Hs, it might be worth dropping one of them a line, or otherwise a post on the WD motorcycles forum asking if anyone has a Norton girder top nut (you don't have to say what it's for !)

I found the B2/205 crown nut at RMG, but some of the dimensions don't jive with the girder fork column measurements on my girder fork. ( See specs below) The 26 TPI measurement looks correct but the Inside diameter of 1.075" would be too small to engage my 1.125" OD male thread. They also list a stem diameter of 1.125" but I'm not sure what they are referring to. Do you think this is the correct part? Or can you shed any light on the inconsistencies? Thanks,PaulPRE FEATHERBED CROWN NUTPlace your mouse over this image

Hi Paul,

I got one of these from Will Horgan, who manufactures a huge range of specialist nuts and bolts for all classic models in stainless steel. Lovely stuff, very high quality. He is ALWAYS at the Kempton park Auto Jumble, has an inside stall in the "long shed" and I think I paid about £5 for mine. It isn't exactly like the original, but fits in al the important places ie. thread and diameter etc.If Kemton park is too far for you to go for one bolt, I can guarantee you will find other stuff at the jumble too, next one is 21st March, link below

Hi Paul, I go to Kempton park every now and then, I have no plans to go next week yet, but if I do go and find one of these I'll pick it up for you and send it to yo along with the number plate holder.
