Gear selection.

Forums

Having just painstakingly rebuilt a Commando gear box, and checked that it all worked correctly on the bench, i am baffled as to whyI have trouble when itsattached to a running engine ??

Symptoms are that with engine running I cannot select 1st gear, and have to start off in 2nd, then snick down into 1st.

Having examined the gear lever movement in the workshop I see that when I try to select 1st the kickstart shaft moves outwards just a little, but does not do this in any other gear combination. If I spin the rear wheel then all gears work properly. Whats going on ??

Thanks.

Hi Hans.

My thoughts in order are:

1) Simple clutch drag.

2) You have the indexing of the cam plate and quadrant lever out by one tooth.

3) You have some wear on the gear dog surfaces that are causing slight end-thrust and pushing out the first gear cogs.

4) You have wear on the cam-plate slots or selector fork pins.
