Gauze oil filter

Forums

I bought an Electra a while back with an external oil filter already in place.  It looks good and seems to function well.

Problem is the bike leaves very large puddles on my garage floor.  One source of the leaks seems to be the sump plate.  While removing the plate I managed to mangle the gauze oil filter.

My question is with the external filter is the gauze filter redundant?  Can I leave it out and make a nice thick gasket and replace the sump plate?

Thanks.

Hi James, I would keep the gauze filter as it removes any large lumps from the oil prior to it passing through the return side of the pump. The external filter is ideal for removing the finer particles but is after the pump.

Similarly the gauze filter out of the tank keeps the lumps from damaging the pressure side of the pump.

Regards.

Dick
