Fuel consumption

With all my bikes I always keep an eye on fuel consumption, as much out of curiosity as much as anything else.

With my 961 I've been very pleasantly surprised at just how good it has been thus far. Over the past few tankfulls I've been managing between 13 and 14 miles/litre which equates to some 59-64 Mpg in old money. yes

I was expecting the figures to drop slightly post the first service however this doesn't appear to have happened.

What are others getting out of their steeds?

On a recent 155 mile trip of mixed roads, it used just under 10 litres so 70mpg which I think is excellent - fuel injection is obviously very efficient. Not too sure of the tank capacity as the manual says 17 litres. I have had the low fuel light on only once and suspect the capacity is nearer 15 litres. Bike has done 1600 miles so well run in now. I ride it faster than my 850 which does 55 to 60 mpg (twin amals)

Blimey Alan. I thought that I was doing well.

It seems that I can expect these sorts of fuel figures from now onwards. Happy days. smiley

Ive had mine for over 3 years(6,000 miles) I get around 50mpg sometimes a bit more. It does not drop below that even on motorway trips cruising at 85mph. I normally fill up when the light comes on with 9.2 litres (approx 2 gallons) and get about 100-110miles before the light comes on again.I have not filled the tank but I think it will take about 3 gallons. BTW my old 850 MK111 roadster will do 60mpg or more with twin carbs but I rarely go over 75mph with a rare blast up to 100mph.

Mine is still under 2 years old and has just less than 5000 on the clock. In normal use it returns 45 - 50 mpg. I usually get about 120 miles between full and the light going on, it takes about 12l to fill up again.

Lee, about 120 full to light can't be arsed to do the maths yet.

Hi Lee,

Realy nice to meet up with you and many other 961 owners at the weekend.

Just to let you know, over the four days at the Norton Festival, I did 730 miles some of which were quite spirited and I averaged 57mpg. Mileage is now 1700 and she's 4 months old. Not bad even with the extra drag of a full pannier system.

Regards, Paul

Yep - Agreed.

Last fill up on the way home gave 113 miles for 7.8 litres used which gives just over 14 miles/litre. Plus that was with some 80+ Mph on the motorway stretches on the way back. Nice!smiley

That's about 53 mpg! Again, not bad for a higher speed dash! Just ordered some bar end weights and adapting some weights for the foot pegs to try and alleviate the 70mph plus vibes!

Let us know how you get on with the bar end weights as I'd be interested to try that on mine. The fuel figures are even better than you imagine. I make that last tank some 65Mpg. Plus the engine feels better than ever - I am going to keep an eye on any oil leakage at the gearbox sprocket end though after our chat.wink

Hi Lee,

Out of the twelve 961's lined up on the day, 7 showed signed of an oil leakage from the gear box sprocket area and two of these were dripping. Those were mine and Nath's. This only a minor niggle though as Norton have discovered a burr on the casting that is causing the seal to leak. Hopefully this will be rectified when it next goes in. Out of interest, mine and Nath's were both close in the production run around February and March. My bar end weights are due in tomorrow and I'm also weighting the foot pegs with lead and a screw on end cap. I'll let you know how I get on.cool

Hi all

Take care that you do not mix UK-MPG with US-MPG...

You can see my figures of consumption with the links below.

I did now 10'000 miles and am keeping track of fuel consumption for the last 10'000 km (>6'000 miles). Consumption is in average a bit below 6 litres per 100 km.

Fear not Raphael - I'm using full fat UK gallons (All 4.5 and-a-bit litres) in my calculations.

I always keep an eye on my bikes' and cars' fuel figures. It's often the first indicator of something amiss if the figures drop unexpectedly.

I'm still impressed by my 961's figures. It's the most fuel efficient bike I've ever owned (With the exception of a Yammie 125 years ago). wink

Not your calculations but Paul's one for your consumption of 53 MPG (see above) was with US gallons, I guess...

No matter, your figures seem to be very good. At what revs do you drive normally?

As stated I was riding at a 'Normal' motorway speed with some A/B road riding thrown in too. In other words conditions which I'm likely to replicate in the future.

These figures seem to be repeatable too. angel

Hi Raphael,

My calculations are in UK gallons not US and the 730 miles was a mixture of motorway cruising at 65 to 70mph (just under 4000 revs) and daily commuting to the Norton festival of 30 miles each way on main roads and minor ones. 57mpg is a fair average to get over that distance but I've heard of others getting even better. The footpeg weights and end caps have just been made and they are yet to be fitted. I'll post some pictures of these when I can.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Lee,

I've just got back from a ride to the Ulster GP with average 60 mpg, I'm well impressed considering our average speed according to uncle tom was 61 mph (not Inc. ferry crossings).

A word of warning to all ! my bike blew of its stand whilst fully loaded. Now I've not had an issue with the stand but on the occasion I was facing very slightly down hill with the front wheel butted to a kerb and the stand had dropped into a small rut. The wind was about 50mph from the right and as I lifted my right leg to dismount the bike lifted on the front wheel and stand pushing me off balance. Yes we all know that feeling of time lapse hopelessness, fortunately my luggage saved all but the clutch lever and my red face. now I will only EVER park on the flat.

Sorry to hear about the bike toppling over Terry. I hope that no damage was done. surprise

60 Mpg sounds good to me

Thanks Lee like I said just the clutch lever and Norton sent me a replacement which arrived as i did. now all I have to do is fit it and clean the bike angry.
