flat air filter for Monobloc on Dommy

Forums

My 1955 Model 88 Dominator has finally run after many years in pieces. It had some very unusual faults, and took some ingenuity to fix.... There's a few trivialities to sort before it hits the road.

A minor item is to fit an air filter. My bike has an open bell mouth on the Monobloc, with a 1" gap between it and the oil tank / exposed battery. From the thread flange to front of battery is 1 3/4" Can anyone recommend a suitable flat air filter which will screw onto the Monobloc eg from KN?.

Paul: I can't remember when the change was made fron pre-Featherbed to Featherbed. Which is yours?

My bike is a 1955 featherbed machine. It has an oil tank and exposed battery, and an open air inlet, no filter arrangement. (Somewhere around 1956 or 57, the bikes got a toolbox and air filter in between.)

So mine just has an open bell-mouth, with a 1 3/4" gap between the carb body and the tank. Or around 1" between the bell-mouth and the tank.... Not much clearance.

FWIW, first featherbed 'Export Model 88' was 1951 but minimal volume of manufacture. Production featherbed Dominators (Model 88) started in 1953, and the iron-lug frames (Model 7 and 77) carried on until 1959. Model 7 had an s/arm iron lug frame from 1953

Paul:

My parts list for the '61-'62 models list an air cleaner pn 19667 for models 88,99Std and D/L. I would think that it would be the same for all years of featherbed models.

Hi Paul,

Not quite helpful but these are the two air filters made by Vokes for the 1955 models. These would fit the 376/18 Monobloc for the 88 or the 376/19 for the Model 7.

All the images I have previously seen of the '55 era Dominators show an un-filtered air inlet? Is this Vokes filter a standard one which can be found for other machines? Or is there a modern filter which will do the job well / better ?

The one made for the 88 is similar to some I have seen fitted to much later Triumphs. Probably the only way to find one is to have a look at shows and have a measure. I doubt there is anything that will look period made now. The one made for the Model 7 won't be commercially available.
