Featherbed TLS front brake cable

Hello

I need a new front brake cable for my Triton which I hope to convert to a es2 . The old cable is useless and may be wrong as the bike has never been on the road . Does the cable have to be made up or can I buy a new one. the front brake is a twin leading shoe type I presume a norton . Because it is a twin leading brake does the cable have to be special

Thank you for any help

I am presuming that your twin leading shoe brake is a Norton item in which case, unless supplied by a specialist like John Tickell, it will most likely be from a Commando. So all you need is a standard brake cable for a pre-1971Commando 750. There may be a slight problem with fitting at the handlebar end as the Commando had an adjuster by the pivot as well as on the brake plate.

There are several suppliers of 'ready to fit' cables for Nortons as well as a couple of specialists who will make up cables to fit 'home-brewed' motorcycles. Check out the ads in publications such as Old Bike Mart.

The Commando cable may be a bit long on a Dommie, mightn't it, Phil?

RGM may do a TLS cable for a Dommie off the shelf, but make sure of what brake it is, as Phil said. RGM do their own tls brakeplate, as well, which I believe is different from the Norton one, although I haven't seen one.

Can you post as photo?

The Commando cable is slightly longer. On my Commando TLS braked Dommie the extra chunk has been looped around the back of the headlamp then over the mudguard.

Thank you Phil and Ian

Went to a shop in Bexleyheath And I then realised that the cable I have on the bike is a clutch cable home made effort completely the wrong guage as it is to thin . The new owner of the shop also was thinking along the lines of a commando cable .

I think I may have resolved the problem of the front brake cable . I have measured the travl and movement of the brake mechanism and the outer cable needs to be 43inches and the inner length 37inches to give me 6 inches of possible movement for fitting I have been on ebay and seen pictures of the cables for a 1971 commando twin leading shoes with the simular fittings such as a 5/16 bsf through bolt . so I might try one and hope that it fits .

Good luck! When I had to change the cable for the Norton TLS on my Dommie I found I had to change the cable anchor. Not all that much of a problem as it turned out but it did mean the Commando cable would fit. It sounds as if yours already has the same thread anyway. But as Phil says - it's a couple of inches too long for a Dommie and has to go round outside the headlamp. (I suspect the PO made up his own cables.)

Thank you David .

It is frustrating not being on the road my three bikes are not fit for purpose yet so that I can sell them for a nice norton . But I like the club and appreciate the advice I am getting
