Featherbed Frame No.

Hello Members

I am trying to register my triton which I hope to put my ES2 engine in and try to make it in to a proper Norton again . But I have no frame number on the frame I have scrapped away the paint on the left rear lug but there is no numbers on the metal not sure what to do.

the log book says the bike is JWA 32 frame no. 390863 date 09.03.1971.

Not sure what to do next

Looks like you need to stamp that number on the frame before someone notices. Allegedly. "39xxxx" doesn't look like an original featherbed number - the books seem to say they ended at round about 150,000 and the Commandos started at 200,000.Of course all this is highly theoretical, imaginary, allegedly, hypothetical, etc. etc.But it'll be nice to know another Norton will arise from the ashes of a Triton...They weren't so particular about all sorts of things years ago.

Thank you David but the frame was stove enameled I bought the bike in 1980 and have not touched it untill a few weeks ago it is in good nick but I may have problems putting on the road without a number even the engine number does not match the log book

You have a frame number on the Log book, D.V.L.A. are not going to bother checking if this. Is a Norton number,or not, get it stamped on now. This is the number, on their records for this machine. If you decide to change the engine, inform them that the one currently listed has been scrapped, and give details of the replacement. The chances are that they will issue a new registration document, with few problems. However, it will always be "Bitza", never a true Norton. There is nothing wrong with a good Triton, why downgrade it to, what will only be, an ES2 replica?

p.s. I note, from a previous post, you live in Bexley. Why not contact the Bexley Triumph O.C. They are a friendly club, and would probably not be too worried about your bike being "Half Breed"!

The registration is from a Sheffield Series issued during 1963. However, the singles were not always big sellers by then so it could have been built earlier.

Presumably a slimline frame ? What is it registered as ?

If the number were 13 90863 then it could be a 1961 Model 50 frame...but only the factory records could confirm if this combination existed.

To be honest, rather than taking part in a debate on open forum where all sorts of potentially illegal activities are being suggested, it might be a good idea to take decent photographs of all the relevant parts and locations and take advantage of the NOC's very thorough and knowledgeable machine dating service. They will be well aware of current DVLA requirements.

Close examination should be able to tell you whether the frame has never been stamped or whether a number has been removed. If the latter then its origins have to be called seriously into doubt and I'd fear that it will not be useable.

Than you Richard

The frame no. has not been erased in anyway , So I may just stamp the numbers in the log book as 390863 and give the engine no. as D13732 that is in the bike now . See how the dvla accept that as I now have the old log book

Hello well it should be 3-90863 built 1960 but 3 is for a model 18 ES stamped 4 so whats going on here ! normally on the gusset its stamped with the model number across the top and then the frame number down the gusset in line starting with the first number at the top and then this follows downward , and someone said there is nothing wrong with a Good Triton the only thing is I not seen a Good Triton yet, has a Triumph twin is not has Good has a Norton twin I raced sidecars and seen many blown triumphs in-fact engine was completely destroyed them self's were has in forty odd years I not seen many Blown Norton motors there has been some but manly down to lack of oil going round the engine, or someone not done thing in the right way in a rebuild or they filed too much off parts trying to lighten them Bracebridge Norton twins are tough engines and so is the Singles too So its best to keep it Bracebridge Street Norton

Bought the bike in 1980 as a rolling chassis. the owner left the t110 engine in it . Stayed in the garage untouched as I got a brain aneursym , got it clipped . Have decided to hit the road again and have bought an es2 . I am trying to replace the triton and t120 bonnie and tiger cub with a 650 ss and a side valve 16h or big four . have just left the bikes un touched for 30 years . bought the es2 1961 2 months ago but am still nervous of going on the road so may wait untill the spring , 6 months after 30 years is just a drop in time . Cheers Anna
