I have been all through my manuals and scoured the archives but can't find any information on rear chain adjustment. It's a swing arm model - is it 1" slack , is it measured with the bike on the stand, off the stand or with someone sitting on it? Basic stuff I know but can't find any references.

Hi Stuart
If you get someone to sit on the bike so that swinging arm is horizontal, i.e. the centrelines of front sprocket, swinging arm pivot and rear sprocket are in alignment. That's the tightest position the chain will ever be in. Set about 1/2" to 3/4" slack with it in that orientation. If you then check the slack with bike on centre stand you will have a reference for future fettling without needing an assistant. Safer to err on the slack side rather than tight.

If you have a genuine Norton handbook, you will find a section on both front, and rear, chain adjustment. In my 60's version, details can be found in paragraph 71.
