My first post appears to have got lest in the ether so apols if this appears twice. I have a '55 ES2. The good book shows an exploded drawing of the rear brake/hub assembly with two versions. one for swinging arm (ribbed brake drum), one for rigid frame (plain drum). Mine is swinging arm but has a plain drum. Have I got the wrong drum? Has anyone got a comparable machine where they can check? Any help greatly appreciated. George

Hi George,
Sorry but your interpretation of the " the good book " is the wrong way around. The finned rear sprocket/drum was only fitted to the plunger type of frame. This drum does nothave integral studs as yours does. These are fixed into the hub and the drum is held by 3 nuts and 3 dowels, hence the 6 holes in the drum and they were also made with-out fins. The confusion here may be the term " spring frame ". Your swinging arm was designed (Norton penny pinching?)to fit the rigid frame wheel and is virtually interchangeable between the 2 frames with possibly a slight variation in the spacers.
The reason the plunger frame wheel is so different is because the 2 piece axle did not provide a rigid enough connection between the 2 slidersso Norton had to usea one piece spindle to clamp it all together and keep the alloy sliders moving in unison. Regards, Richard.
