Es2 plunger seat mounting

Forums

Hi all,

The sprung seat on my ES2 is not original. The springs have a large bolt going through them into the top of the frame. I am now trying to fit something like the standard seat, but I believe that the springs are mounted to the frame through a mounting post or stud. anybody know where I can get a pair of these? Or if need be the dimensions to get some made up.

Thanks

If it's like mine (1952) the springs mount to vertical studs on the rear frame tubes. They're threaded 5/16" Cycle. I just made a couple of studs to screw into the mountings leaving plenty of thread to adjust the height. But my seat is non-standard having a plate fixed horizontally beneath the frame bringing the whole lot back about an inch.

You may be able to see them on this pic....

Guys, that is brilliant, very different from mine. So it is parts 3,4 & 5 from the parts drawing that I need. Will try Norvil, anybody got any other suggestions as to who can supply them?

The way of attaching sprung saddles to their springs must have been designed by a sadist. But there's an easy way to tackle this.

First of all, get the bolt in position with the head downwards and the threaded section protruding through the eye at the top. Easily done with one of those magnets on a stick.

Then wedge a bit of card between the coils of the spring and below the bolt head. This will hold it in position while you wangle the seat frame over it and get the nut started. Saves lots of cursing and skinned knuckles.

Thanks for the exceptionally clear photos. I am returning to my 1953 ES2 project bike after too long of a hiatus.I need to fabricate a battery cage or "tray" for the left side. I am thinking of getting one of the faux Lucas black cases of the original dimensions and then bending up some Type 304 stainless (18-8 weldable) to form a carrier.I have been unable to locate a replacement that looks to be year specific for the '53. I looked at Classic Bike Shop, Redditch. They cases they offer look to be substantial.I am extremely lucky that I live in close proximity to the Barber's Motorsports museum which can give me a lot of smaller details by looking at the bikes on display. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open. Thanks, Geoff Morgan, Alabama, USA

Hi Geoff - Here is a shot from Roy Bacons ' book " Norton Singles " . Drive side photos seem rare but fortunately this one shows a 1953 ES2 from the left . While difficult to discern, it appears very similar to the one on my 1950 plunger ES2. I will post a shot of that as well in a following post as I can't seem to post more than one photo at a time. My carrier has a dummy case with a sealed 6 volt battery inside as you mentioned you would like the same . Using the original as a pattern , I fabricated the hold down strap of brass and nickel plated it . I may still have the original strap somewhere- I'll look for it this evening and I can send it to you if you wish . I am on your side of the pond in NJ. I can also remove the battery from mine and take photos/ measurements of the carrier itself if you wish - LMK .

Cheers - Richard

Here is photo of plunger chassis mounting - again , while difficult to discern, it appears that the swinging arm chassis carrier stands plumb along with the battery while the plunger mounting has its vertical back component off vertical while the battery itself stands plumb.

It may benefit to start a new thread for this as the title concerns seat mounting - you will likely get more focus for battery carrier if that is in the title
