Recently acquired ES2 enigine, think 1960 but in any case the distributor version, has two mods from previous owners.
Having failed to find similar in manuals, photos etc your help is needed.
1. Screw has been inserted in timing cover near dist, possibly directly over dist shaft. Is this access to oil the shaft?? or WHAT?
see photo (hopefully added)
2. Low down on timing cover is an 'exit' pipe which was routed down under the crankcase. Not low enough to act as anti wetsump (even if it could). Has the pipe been cut off from an oil gauge? or WHAT?
see photo (hopefully added) Ideally I like to dispose of this with a blanking plug/screw/bolt.
Advice, suggestions and best guesses appreciated.
regards John

The screw is to allow you to add a drop of oil to lubricate the distributor spindle. It is standard for distributor fitted ES2s.

Ian.

The lubrication proceedure…
The lubrication proceedure is shown in Paragraph #128 Contact Breaker (Model 50 and ES2) of the service manual.
The proceedure says: " Removal of the small screw in the top of the housing carrying the contact breaker discloses an oilway into which a few drops of engine oilshould be injected every 2000 miles."

Ian, thanks for reply. Can't believe that I didn't register that in the Norton factory manual which clearly shows the screw...and as you say is standard.

Thanks for reply Mike...after Ian's reply I looked more closely in said manual and found exactly what you have listed above. Stupid me not seeing this sooner.

Not sure about the screw, but the pipe is a drain for the distributor drive case(or in my case the mag drive case) there is an oil pressure valve in the timing case which vents into the disc drive case, keeping the chain lightly oiled, if it gets carried away then it has somewhere to drain. Although I've not seen any oil from mine yet.

Dan, thanks for reply. Seems a bit Heath Robinson to me but in view of your comments I'll leave it in place and see how it pans out.

Mine doesn't drip, but in fairness I haven't done many miles. I did renew the valve and got the ball spring and screw from Russel motors as I recall.
