I have just bought my first Norton single - a 1961 Norton ES2.
It was last licensed in 1978 so it may have stood in a shed for 40 years.
I turned it over slowly when I got it home, and oil ran out from behind the inner chaincase - not just a drip, a small stream.
I know the oil has drained from the tank, but why such a run?
I took off the chaincase and found that the oil was coming out of the rear of the three threaded holes which hold the stator housing in place. This hole seems to lead straight into the breather tube cavity.
What's the purpose of the large hole in the crankcase directly below the drive shaft?
Is this normal - what's going on?

If the bike sat for a while prior to the oil being drained it may well have wet-sumped so the crankcase was pretty full of oil. When you turned it over the oil was forced out (as the piston descended) through any available orifices. George
