Early Heavy Twins Rev Counter Drive Alteration

Forums

Hi,

the following fix for worn cables of earlier heavy twins with angled rev counter drives might help others with the same problem:

My 1963 Atlas has the early timing cover with the forward angled rev counter drive (aftermarket), and the cable bends sharply around the exhaust. While my present cable with the outside spiral lasted several thousand miles, the next cable might be less forgiving. Fitting the later re-designed cover with a vertical drive or the early ‘bent’ exhaust pipe (same as Manxman?) are the obvious solutions, but both are hard to come by.

Replacing the backing plate which is screwed onto the rev counter body with a re-worked stainless steel plate is a simple and inexpensive solution to the issue. Instructions and drawing are attached as a PDF - it takes about two hours to make the plate. Plate and bolts are 3mm or 4mm 304L stainless. The alteration requires studs to be fixed to the plate, as heads will be obscured. A TIG welder is an advantage to secure these, but tapping the plate is an alternative. A file, angle grinder and drill press are required.

Hello Holger,

While I am lucky enough to have the 'upright' drive, what you have done is a great thing for those who have covers like you have.

A simple, cheap and easy to make improvement is always good to see.

Regards, George.
