Early 50's es2 engine/gearbox plates

Forums

Early 50's es2 pre featherbed engine and gearbox plates needed. Has anyone an idea of where to find these plates. If I had a template I could make them. Thank you. Ian.

Neil Wyatt has had a spare set made, see here: http://www.nortonownersclub.org/noc-chat/news-and-views/614193361/view. I bought a complete set with gearbox adjuster at Netley last year so they do turn up, which can also be used for reference.

My trials ES2 has home made plates which are easy to cut out of 6mm aluminium, the gearbox is adjusted with a snail cam against an extra bolt in the plates, but they don't have the footrest mounting with the serated end which the original ones have. Having them made and fitted to the plates involves a bit more work. I,ll post a picture of the set later.

Im happy to trace around my original ones if it helps?

Dan, Ian requires plates for an early 50's ES2 and I'm certain these will be different to mine. Firstly because the early 50's, depends which year will use either the upright gearbox or the laydown gearbox. And then I'm not certain regards the bottom rear mounting points. Remember, mine was only made in 1957 and 1958 and is a different frame to the pre 57.

I was most fortunate that Ian R in Australia had what I wanted and had a couple of sets made for me. I have donated the spare set to club spars so they can use them as a pattern for when they are requested. I feel someone needs to do the same for earlier plates. (And a lot of other parts) I wouldn't want Ian waiting eight years like I was.

Currently it is looking like members need to take control over providing unobtainable spares as the EC appears to be incapable or at least being very quiet about making any progress.

Neil, you're right his is prob a lay down box. But to be honest engine and gearbox plates are not difficult to fabricate, adding in the footrest mounts adds some complexity. Perhaps when members have a part manufactured we should see if the club would like to buy a batch at the same time? But I must admit that I think it's a bit optimistic to think that all parts should be available off the shelf or that the club officers have the time to research what parts might be getting rare and manage a remanufacturing excercise ..... If that's what anyone is thinking, but perhaps there could be a web page to record "wants" so the club does at least have the ability to gauge demand.

Dan, having all parts available or ready to produce on demand is the ideal to aspire to. There appears no movement to improve matters from the EC at present. After all, you can build a brand new Commando!

I asked for a list but don't see it and a thread to input your unobtainable requirements has not appeared, no encouragement!

BTW, any news with your E0 enquiries?

Thanks for the link Dan. On the E0 Front I think you will only find Esso Synergy Supreme outside of SW, Teesside and Green Scotland (Used to be Bonny!) Esso still reckon that 80% of Supreme is E0. But don't buy it from a Tesco store on site , this is EN228 and says so on the pump.

Thank you very much Dan. I would be grateful if you could trace your plates and then I'll have a go at making them.

i am in no immediate rush for them. If it's easier, you can email me at ian.visualeyes@gmail.com to communicate further.

sorry for the late reply, but I've just logged into the site again since posting the cry for help!

ian.

Hello, the frame is a 1954 and I believe that the lay down gearbox was fitted to that year.Any help in locating engine/gearbox plates, would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Ian,

Yes I can help. I'm away on holidays (getting away from the Melbourne cold and drizzle) tomorrow for a week on the Gold Coast (currently warm but wet). I'll follow up with you when I return. Email me on richtsteig1@optusnet.com.au and we can see how best to proceed.

That's great news! Thank you!

I was down your neck of the woods nearly 30 years ago, building a boat that sailed around Australia in the 1988 bicentennial yacht race. I wonder if she's still afloat!!

I will email you, thank you once again.

regards, Ian.
